About the “DIN 1946-6 Domestic Ventilation” Calculation Method

Explains the concept of determining the required air volumes for domestic ventilation and the creation of ventilation concepts based on the DIN 1946-6 Domestic Ventilation calculation method.

The calculation method DIN 1946-6 Domestic Ventilation is used to create ventilation concepts for humidity control for apartments and ventilation zones used in the same way, e.g. residential homes, retirement homes and nursing homes. Aspects regarding building physics, ventilation, building services and hygiene are taken into account in accordance with DIN 1946-6 and DIN 18017-3. Usage units are referred to as ventilation zones.

In the first step, the module determines whether ventilation measures are required for a building structure. Measures are required when the air volume flow required for humidity control is more than the air volume flow rate that occurs through infiltration via the building envelope. In addition, measures are required if increased requirements for sound protection, room air quality or energy efficiency are imposed.

According to the standard, an independent ventilation concept is created for each ventilation zone. Classification takes place via the ventilation zones, which are set in the building data. The standard considers the ventilation situation of the individual ventilation zones, because every ventilation measure also affects all other rooms in this ventilation zone. Ventilation zones are apartments, single-family houses or room groups used in the same way.

If a measure of ventilation technology is required, the necessary air volume flow rate has to be covered continuously and independently of the user by free or mechanical ventilation.

You can globally assign a uniform ventilation concept to the ventilation zones as well as exclude ventilation zones from the ventilation concept. Free ventilation, ventilator-based ventilation and combined systems are available as ventilation concepts. Free ventilation takes place as cross ventilation or via a shaft. With ventilator-based ventilation systems, you can choose between extract air and supply air systems, as well as a combination of both systems. You can also combine free ventilation with ventilator-based ventilation.
